PE classes incorporate healthy food choices and exercising in order to stay fit and healthy. Students will learn how to check their own heart rate and will develop an understanding for their target heart rate during their workouts. Grades 4 and 5 will learn about the FITT principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time & Type). All grades will discover which foods are "sometime" foods and which are "anytime" foods, as well as, watch a slideshow of adult obesity trends (see link). After having all this fun in PE class, the students are now ready to put their knowledge into practice. The students are encouraged to take part in a heart health challenge for 2 weeks in the Spring. Students are encouraged to exercise, eat right, and watch less TV. Students will keep a log of their activities and score themselves depending on the decisions they make throughout the challenge. Younger students may need a little help with tallying their points. However, this will a be great time for the entire family to get involved and make it a fun experience.
At the end of the 2 weeks, your child will total their number of points. This activity can be done many times throughout the year by simply downloading the attached score sheet.
