All grades began the year with some fun cooperative activities, such as, Hula Hoop Hut Challenge, Castle Ball, and Cross the Pond. The objective was to teach the expectations and rules of PE class.
In the month of September grades K-2 will be working on Locomotor Skills (Running, Galloping, Leaping, Sliding, Hopping, Skipping etc) and moving and different pathways (Straight, Zig-Zag, Curved). Skill execution will be practiced, as well as, being able to identify these skills when performed by a peer. We also discussed the possible uses for skipping, hopping, galloping, and side sliding to provide a better understanding of why we learn them. Grades 3-5 will be working Throwing and Catching. They will be able to demonstrate and identify key elements of both skills, and understand how to transfer more force into the throw through the efficient use of their body.
October & November:
K-2: Students worked on basketball skills. They learned the key elements of how to dribble, bounce pass and chest pass, and shooting. They used these skills in basketball lead up games, such as, Windows, Keep Away, and Hot Shot. In December, they will be moving onto the Components of Fitness. As they move around fitness stations in small groups they will have many activities associated with Muscle Strength and Endurance, Cardio, and Flexibility. They will work on correct technique and identifying which exercise goes with which component.
3-5: These grades will begin with their Fitness Testing and learning about Muscle Strength and Endurance. Students will be working in small groups using iPads and QR codes (links to gif's) to learn many exercises within the components of fitness and subsequently attempt to identify the parts of body associated with each exercise.
In December, upper grades will learn how to use technology in PE class. They will understand how to peer assess using a Slow Motion video app, how to monitor their MVPA using as pedometer, and measure their heart rate using pulse meter.
